As a new mum, expressing and storing breast milk can be a bit daunting. But with the right guidelines, you can ensure your little one gets the benefits of your milk even when you’re not around. Here’s how to store breast milk safely:
Storage Containers
– Use clean, airtight containers or breast milk storage bags
– Label with date, time, and amount expressed
Storage Times
– Room Temperature (25°C/77°F): Up to 4 hours
– Refrigerator (4°C/39°F): Up to 3 days
– Freezer (-18°C/0°F): Up to 6 months
Storage Tips
– Store milk in small amounts (2-4 oz) to avoid waste
– Keep containers at the back of the fridge or freezer
– Don’t mix freshly expressed milk with already frozen milk
Thawing and Reheating
– Thaw frozen milk in the fridge or under running water
– Use thawed milk within 24 hours
– Don’t re-freeze thawed milk
– Reheat milk gently (never microwave)
